Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Islamic Education Studies (IES): an Indonesian Journal recognizes that advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology can provide support at various stages of research and scientific manuscript preparation. The use of this technology can assist with literature searches, information organization, data analysis, language editing, and improvements to manuscript structure and clarity of presentation.

Although AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs) and generative AI, offer various benefits in supporting academic activities, their use cannot replace authors’ intellectual responsibility, critical judgment, and integrity. Therefore, Islamic Education Studies (IES): an Indonesian Journal establishes this AI policy as a guideline for authors, reviewers, and editors to ensure that the use of such technologies is responsible, transparent, and consistent with the ethical principles of research and scholarly publishing.

1. Permitted Use of AI

The journal permits the use of AI tools to support research activities and manuscript preparation, provided that such use does not compromise originality, violate academic ethics, or transfer scientific responsibility away from the authors:

a. Language Editing and Proofreading AI may be used to assist in improving grammar, spelling, punctuation, and clarity of expression without altering the scientific substance of the ideas presented.
b. Literature Search and Reference Management AI-based tools may be used to support literature searches and reference organization. Authors remain responsible for verifying the authenticity, relevance, and accuracy of every source used.
c. Manuscript Similarity Checking Text similarity detection tools may be used as supporting instruments to identify parts of a manuscript that require further examination, but not as the sole basis for determining plagiarism.
d. Data Analysis and Presentation Support AI may assist with data processing, exploration, and preliminary interpretation. Authors must ensure analytical methods are appropriate and findings are scientifically justifiable.

2. Prohibited Use of AI

The following practices are strictly prohibited to safeguard academic integrity:

a. Replacement of Intellectual Contributions AI must not replace the substantive role of authors in formulating research problems, arguments, methods, interpretations, and conclusions.
b. Fabrication, Manipulation, and Misrepresentation AI must not be used to create false data, fabricate results, alter findings, manipulate evidence, or generate unsupported information.
c. Misuse of Information & Primary Islamic Sources Generating fictitious references or unverifiable sources is prohibited. Citations of Qur’anic verses, hadith, and classical Islamic texts must be verified directly against authoritative primary sources and never taken directly from AI outputs.
d. Violation of Rights and Confidentiality AI usage must not lead to copyright infringement, misuse of personal data, or breach of research and editorial confidentiality.

3. Requirements and Responsibilities for the Use of AI

  • Verification & Validation: Authors must critically examine all AI-generated outputs for accuracy, valid references, and consistency with scientific evidence.
  • Transparent Disclosure: Generative AI used in developing manuscript content must be declared (identifying the tool, purpose, and stages used). Spelling or grammar AI assistance must also be disclosed per journal guidelines.
  • Appropriate Citation: Authors must state the AI tool/software used when relevant without replacing primary source citations.
  • Prohibition on Listing AI as Author: AI tools cannot be listed as authors as they cannot fulfill academic and publication responsibilities.

4. Authors’ Responsibilities

Authors bear full responsibility for the originality, accuracy, and integrity of the entire manuscript, including sections prepared with AI assistance. Authors must ensure the accuracy of all references to primary sources by directly checking official sources.

5. Responsibilities of Reviewers and Editors

a. Confidentiality of Peer-Review Uploading manuscripts or peer-review reports to public AI tools is strictly prohibited to prevent confidentiality breaches.
b. Human Responsibility for Evaluation Substantive manuscript assessment must be conducted personally by human reviewers. AI may only refine the language of a review report without including manuscript text.
c. Use of Editorial Support Tools Editors may use AI detection tools as supplementary information, but final decisions must remain based on human judgment.

6. Editorial Review and Oversight

All manuscripts are subject to the same scientific and ethics standards regardless of AI usage. Editors may assess compliance, request clarification, or conduct investigations. AI detection tool outputs will not serve as the sole evidence for misconduct decisions.

7. Policy Review and Updates

Islamic Education Studies (IES): an Indonesian Journal will periodically review and update its AI policy to adapt to technological developments, evolving research practices, and global publication ethics standards.
